On November 15, international media reported that Vietnamese State President Luong Cuong, in his speech at the APEC Summit in Peru, issued a warning message about the risk of a global trade war. This is considered the strongest criticism of Donald Trump, after his second re-election as US President for the next four-year term.
Cuong is the number 2 politician of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and is considered a pro-Beijing figure. At the same time, his hostile statements towards the United States show the anti-US and pro-China policies of a significant part of Vietnamese leaders.
In addition, there have been comments that Cuong used the APEC Summit Forum in Peru to vent his anger at Trump. What does that have to do with the arrest of a Vietnamese police officer accompanying him in Chile on charges of sexual harassment?
Many suspect that there is a high possibility that a high-ranking leader with great influence in the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security is involved, as well as the billion-dollar project of the Trump Organization in Hung Yen province, the hometown of General Secretary To Lam. This is a project that includes two 54-hole golf courses, along with a network of hotels, resorts and high-end residential complexes.
According to international analysts, the above project would probably not have received as much attention if Trump had not been re-elected for a second term, and if Hung Yen had not been Lam’s hometown.
The re-election of Trump for a second term is something that the Beijing leadership absolutely does not want. In his first term, Trump created too many disadvantages for China, through the US-China Trade War, causing the Chinese economy to be significantly “bruised.”
Therefore, the reaction of the Vietnamese State President at the APEC Summit, definitely cannot rule out the possibility of protecting China’s interests. That will certainly make Trump and his cabinet unhappy.
With the above move, Cuong has “killed two birds with one stone” as pleasing Xi Jinping and at the same time destroying all efforts of Lam, with the intention of bringing Vietnam closer to the US and the West.
After taking power, some of the top leaders of the Vietnamese Government often try to promote investment in their homeland, in order to change the face of their homeland, which is understandable. Like former Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Quang Nam province, or like Nguyen Tan Dung in Ca Mau province with a total investment of up to hundreds of millions of dollars.
But the Trump Organization’s Project in Hung Yen province – the hometown of Lam is not that simple. This project is directly related to the new 47th President of the United States – Trump, so Lam and his faction certainly have political interests.
According to journalist David Hutt, Lam and his political faction, through this project, will gain great influence over the upcoming US administration. This is something that Beijing and a majority of pro-China Vietnamese leaders absolutely do not want.
Meanwhile, in recent years, the Vietnamese government has been lobbying the US government to recognize Vietnam as a market economy but has not yet succeeded. This has a huge impact on Vietnam’s exports to the US, as the turnover continues to increase.
Cuong does not realize that finding every way to break Lam’s “rice pot” and please Beijing will cause the greatest damage to the Vietnamese people and country.
